Electric Vehicle Department

For many years the Electric Vehicle Department was located at Hanworth Plant before being moved to Popham Close (adjacent to Hanworth retail branch). The EV department was essential for keeping the fleet of Job's electric vehicles fully operational. This included all of the milk floats located at the 'town' branches along with their respective chargers and fork lifts. The upkeep of the electric vehicles at the 'country' branches was taken care of for many years by Don Chanter of Horncastle Garage.

In addition to the large, well-equipped workshop located at Hanworth the two mobile workshops were an integral part of the EV. These mobile units performed servicing at the town branches on a regular basis in addition to attending electric vehicle breakdowns on the road.

Hi,

I've been following your excellent website for a while now, and was amazed to see mention of Don Chanter from Horncastle Garage maintaining the vehicles for the Country branches.

My father, John Denton, worked with Don for many years, until ill health forced his early retirement, in the 80's. I myself, as a child, remember spending time with him on weekend callouts at all the branches, Woodley, Basingstoke, Shinfield and Tadley especially coming to mind right now.

Unfortunately, John passed away a good few years back, and I'm not aware of any photos or documents going back to the Job's days that I can contribute.

But I do remember the days fondly, especially my visit one day to the Hanworth plant, and seeing those cows on the building. And also the constant supply of Strawberry Cream Soda, and the milkshakes!

Please let me know if I can help further in any way, or if anyone remembers my father, and I'll do all I can to help.

Many Thanks,

Barry Denton
