Transport Department
Job's Transport Department began life as just a few hand carts operating from the dairy at Teddington and flourished to become an impressive fleet of modern 32 tonne ERF tractor units hauling 40 foot refrigerated trailers at the time the company was sold in 1987.
The years in between saw many changes to the fleet as it grew to meet the demands of retail branch expansion and acquisition of other dairy companies.
In the early years most of Job's vehicles were purchased second hand and saw many years and thousands of miles of service before they were replaced.
Loading and unloading at Hanworth Plant was carried out manually up until the introduction of fork lift trucks in the early 1970's. Gradually this became the accepted way of unloading at retail branches too but it would be quite a few years before every retail branch was upgraded and able to accept fork lift trucks.
Driver's mates who until the introduction of fork lifts had been a vital part of the Transport staff disappeared either through natural wastage or to become fork lift drivers themselves.
Job's had a policy of training their own HGV drivers and it was very rare that an outsider would be employed as a new driver. Driver's mates became Fork lift drivers who in turn progressed to become HGV Class 1 drivers based on their length of service, with all training and driving test costs paid for by Job's.
